Struggling to cope with what's going on in Palestine right now?

I think it’s safe to say that it’s nearly impossible to avoid what’s going on in Palestine right now. The constant influx of distressing images and stories can take a toll on our mental health, leaving many feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed. In this post, we’ll explore practical strategies to help you safeguard your mental health when dealing with current updates in the media.

Stay Informed Whilst Understanding Propaganda

While it’s essential to stay informed, choose your sources wisely. Seek out news outlets that are trustworthy and can back up claims with facts. We are in an ocean of news, and it can be often difficult to differentiate real news from fake. Learn to distinguish between facts, opinions, and propaganda. Engaging in balanced and informative reporting can help you gain a deeper understanding of complex situations, reducing anxiety fueled by misinformation and superficial narratives.

Limit Your Exposure

The first step in protecting your mental health is to manage your media consumption. Constantly scrolling through news feeds and watching distressing images can lead to “doomscrolling,” which can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and despair. Set boundaries by designating specific times for news updates and be mindful of the sources you choose. Try to avoid sensationalist and graphic content. (though I know this can be very hard!)

Practice Self-Care And Gratitude

Engage in activities that help you relax and de-stress, such as prayer , Exercise, or deep breathing exercises. I know it can often feel selfish to do things for yourself knowing the suffering taking place for others, but it is important to remember that God has placed everyone in their position for a purpose and it is an injustice to others and yourself to not show gratitude for your blessings by utilising them. Remember it doesn’t serve anyone for you to be in a bad mental state.

Connect and Communicate

Feelings of isolation can be common during times of crisis. Reach out to friends and family for support and share your concerns and feelings. Talking about your worries can help alleviate some of the emotional burden you may be carrying.

Seek Professional Help

If you find that your mental health is significantly impacted by the media’s portrayal of war and conflict, don’t hesitate to reach out and seek professional help. We have licensed counsellors who can provide the necessary tools to cope with your emotions and provide guidance to navigate these difficult times.

Take Action

Sometimes, feelings of helplessness can intensify emotional distress. If you feel compelled, consider taking action to support causes related to peace, humanitarian aid, or conflict resolution demonstrations. Volunteering or contributing to organizations can give you a sense of purpose and hope in the face of adversity.

In a world where war and injustice are unfortunately prevalent, protecting your mental health is of utmost importance. By limiting exposure, staying informed through reliable sources, practicing media literacy, focusing on self-care, seeking support, and taking action, you can maintain your mental well-being even in the face of media’s distressing narratives. Remember that you are not alone, and there are resources available to help you navigate these challenging times while safeguarding your mental health."
